With such upheaval comes an outpouring of explosive, fast-paced, and anthemic folk rock. This album is an honest reflection of band members personal experiences of starting a family, losing a loved one, and coming out on the other side forever changed. Their latest album ‘Like A Rising Sun’ (June 19, 2020), produced by Nygel Asselin and mixed by Ben Kaplan, is the group’s fifth offering and their most raw autobiography. Their progressive pairing of acoustic instrumentation with electric counterparts, harmonies, and driving rhythm, continues to develop and reach new heights. The band’s striking and energy-packed sound has evolved from their eclectic musical influences and their unique experiences and individual backgrounds. “Their shows are joyous celebrations of life that will only reaffirm most of the things you love about music.” (Rice and Bread Magazine) Over the past decade the band have taken their highly energetic live show from humble beginnings on the Canadian ski-town circuit to the international stage. Shred Kelly is a five piece, alternative folk rock band that emerged from the heart of the Canadian Rockies in 2009. And two of my friends who are new to the band got to enjoy it as well. However, I am very thankful that I was able to experience this for free! It was a lovely evening. I'm a musician, and a vocalist, so I can appreciate all the work that goes into such a performance. I would have appreciated a slightly lesser sound so I could sit closer and see the band's faces. The sound mixer was obviously looking for a particular sound, as he walked all over the hillside to check things, but the sound he got involved more distortion and was louder than I like. I went and got earplugs so I could sit with my friends half-way up the hill, but eventually went further up sans earplugs, so I could listen easily, and dance. In smaller venues (like Caetani House) I could hear the lyrics better because the vocals were not over-powered by the instruments, in particular the base sound.Īt Sun Peaks I would have liked to hear the voices more. I love the folksy, Appalachian moments, interspersed with the rock rhythms. I like how they showcase the different members of the band equally, and I like how every song starts in a unique way, leading us along in a suspenseful sequence of layering of instruments/voice, crescendos, diminuendos, full stops, etc. I love this band, they are consistent, put 150% out, and their lyrics and interesting arrangements top class.
